Carver School Has Reunion Here This is a reprint of the article from the Stephens Star. The first Carver School Reunion was held Saturday and Sunday, July 3-4, 1982. The school was built in 1951 and held its first graduation exercises in May of 1952. Registration for the reunion was held at the former Carver High School, now the Stephens Elementary School, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday with approximately two hundred persons signing the register. During this time, former graduates and classmates greeted each other, beginning with the class of 1952. Excitement mounted as the day went on because many classmates had not seen each other since their graduation. Saturday night the group attended a banquet at the Hush Puppy Restaurant in Camden. Joe T. Todd, President of the Carver School Reunion Committee, presided at the banquet and was accompanied at the head table by his wife, Virginia. Ms. Rochelle Butler sang the Lord’s Prayer and Mrs. Odie M. Richard gave the greeting. During the banquet, Todd presented each class president, and also all former faculty members present. The group was delighted to hear remarks from former faculty members: Mrs. Mildred Sanders, Mrs. Ethel Graham, Raymond Porchia, Theodore Blake, Morris J. Graham and Mrs. Gracie Hill. The evening ended with a disco social event at the Camden Hotel. Sunday the reunion was continued at 2 p.m. at the school building with Fred D. Green serving as Master of Ceremonies. Inspirational singing was provided by the St. Stephens Baptist Church Gospel Choir. Greetings were given by Green, appointee of W.E. Arrington, Mayor of Stephens, Raymond Porchia, Principal of the School and Margaree Jones, Alumni. The occasion was given by Anna Burnett Graham and the Introduction of the Speaker by Earl Jones. Theodore Blake, Coach and Athletic Director of Lewisville High School, was the speaker for this occasion. The Class of 1959 was awarded a plaque for having the largest number in attendance. Todd, president of the reunion committee, made the presentation. The Class of 1952 received the award for the highest percentage of members present with six of the twelve graduates present. The reunion was attended by former students now living in California and New York and many states in between. And they plan to hold another reunion in two years. Planning Committee members for this first event included the President Joe T. Todd, Vice President Raymond Christopher, Secretary Sarah Todd, Assistant Secretary Odie Richard, Treasurer Fred D. Green, Financial Secretary Margaree T. Jones, Corresponding Secretary Lorean Butler, members Esther J. Christopher, Lemar Jones, and Artis Williams. After the program ended Sunday, the group stayed for picture taking and refreshments. ―Submitted by Artis Williams Previous | Next |
